Mysore Dasara (मैसूर दशहरा)

Mysore city is located in Karnataka near Bangalore. Mysore Dasara is a 10-day long festival which is celebrated with great pomp in Mysore. In Mysore, Dasara marks the victory of Devi Durga over Mahishasura and the idol of Chamundeshwari Devi is worshiped in the Mysore Palace. Jambu ride or elephant procession is one of the most prominent events of this festival. The city of Mysore was once called 'Mahishoor', as it is believed to be the place where Devi Chamundeshwari (a form of Durga) killed the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura. Since then, the nine days have been celebrated with great enthusiasm.
How is Mysore Dasara celebrated?
With spectacular processions, cultural events, fairs and exhibitions, Mysore Dasara is India's most extraordinary Dasara celebration. The festival is celebrated during Navratri and reaches a grand finale on Vijayadashami. Mysore Dasara attracts tourists from far and wide.

During the jambu ride or elephant procession, 12 trained elephants dressed in colorful costumes are taken out on the streets. One of them places the idol of Chamundeshwari on top of a golden mandapa. The procession starts from Mysore Palace to Bannimantap. Performances such as traditional dance, music and fencing can be seen throughout the procession. As it passes through the city streets, it spreads enthusiasm and joy throughout the city.

When will the Mysore Dasara Festival 2024 begin:
Mysore Dasara festival will start from 3rd October 2024 and will continue till 12 October 2024. The Mysore Dasara Procession (Jumbo Savari) will start from noon on 12th October 2024.

This time the Mysore Palace will be illuminated with over 97,000 bulbs. Mysore Dasara Festival is an immersive experience for all the tourists visiting the city at this time.

Mysore is well connected to the entire region. There are several express train options available between Bangalore and Mysore. There are many options of state transport buses as well as private buses.
