The new moon day falling in the month of Bhadrapada is known as Pithori Amavasya. The new moon day occurs every month, with each instance known by different names and associated with unique significance. On Pithori Amavasya, women worship Devi Durga and pray for the long lives of their sons. Kusha grass is used in religious rituals such as Pitri Tarpan (offering oblations to ancestors), and the day of Bhadrapada Amavasya is specifically chosen for gathering it; hence, it is also known as Kusha Amavasya .

Worship method and importance of Pithori Amavasya fast?
❀ On the day of Pithori Amavasya, get up early in the morning at Brahma Muhurta.
❀ Take a bath by mixing Ganges water in the bath water. Light a lamp in the temple of the house. Offer arghya to the surya dev. Make offerings and donations for the ancestors.
❀ Do charity with the worship of Bhagwan Vishnu and Mahadev according to the bidhi.

Significance of Pithori Amavasya
❀ By observing the fast of Pithori Amavasya, childless people get children.
❀ Mothers who observe this fast are blessed with long life and good health for their children.
❀ On this day, women make idols of 64 devi’s including Maa Durga with flour and offer prayers.

It is believed that only married women can fast and worship Pithori Amavasya.

Pola Festival

Pola Mahotsav is a festival celebrated by farmers in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh on the day of Pithori Amavasya, celebrated for the importance of bulls, which are an important part of agriculture and agricultural activities. A similar festival is celebrated as Mattu Pongal in the south and Godhan in north and west India. In Telangana, a similar festival is celebrated on a full moon day called Iruvaka Purnima.

Method of Pola Festival
In preparation for the festival, the bulls are cleaned and decorated with shawls, bells and flowers, their horns painted, and decorated with new bridles and ropes and taken in procession. When they return from the procession, they are formally welcomed by the family members by lighting an earthen lamp with puja and aarti.
