Rameshwaram Temple: The Ancient Temple Town of Chardham (रामेश्वरम मंदिर: मंदिरों का प्राचीन शहर - चारधाम)

Rameshwaram is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus, and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage. This is a beautiful island located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Mythology:
The Ramanatha Swamy Temple dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva occupies a major area of Rameswaram. The temple is believed to have been consecrated by Shri Rama Chandra. The presiding deity here is in the form of a Linga with the name Sri Ramanatha Swamy, it also is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

Procedure:
Before entering temple devotees take bath in the sea which is called Agni Theertham . The history says Bhagwan Rama after the war with Ravana at the instance of the great saints to get rid of the "Brahma Dosham" have take a holy dip here. The water at this place is considered sacred and Pilgrims also perform poojas in honour of their ancestors at this seashore.

Proceed to the temple for Teerth snanam (Holy bath). The temple has 22 sacred wells that are said to contain holy water from different places. You need to sequentially take bath at each place.

After having bath devotees change their clothes and enter to take darshan of Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple. It is renowned for its magnificent prakaras or corridors with massive sculptured pillars on either side. The temple has the longest corridor in the world.
