Ganga Dussehra is a major festival of Hindus. Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami is called Dussehra. It is written in Skandpuran that, Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami is considered to be Samvatsarmukhi, especially bath in it and do charity. This year this sacred festival will be celebrated on 1st June 2020. According to rituals devotees need to do Arghya (Pujadik) and Tilodak on any river.
According to the Purans, bathing the Ganga on the day of Ganga Dussehra has special significance. Ganga descended from heaven on this day, so it is considered to be a great festival. Bhagwan Shiva is anointed in all Ganga temples on the day of Ganga Dussehra. On this day, Mokshadayini Ganga is also worshiped.
By bathing in any river on the day of Ganga Dussehra, by donating and offering tarpan, man is freed from at least ten sins committed unknowingly. The name of this date has been named Ganga Dussehra only after the abolition of these ten sins.
How to do Ganga Dussehra fast?
❀ The fast of Ganga Dussehra is observed to please Bhagwan Vishnu.
❀ Bhagwan Vishnu is worshiped on this day.
❀ On this day, people observe fast and leave water (after sacrificing water).
❀ Hears the story of Gyaras (Ekadashi) and the next day people perform charity.
❀ On this day, by donating water and then drinking water, devotees complete their fast.
❀ On this day, devotees donate things like banana, coconut, pomegranate, betel nut, melon, mango, water filled surai, hand fan etc.
❀ During bathing on the Ganga Dussehra, one should chant the mantra ‘ऊँ नम: शिवाय नारायण्यै दशहराय गंगाय नम:’. After this, chant the mantra ‘ ऊँ नमो भगवते ए ह्रीं श्रीं हिलि हिलि मिलि मिलि गंगे मां पावय स्वाहा’and offer 10 flowers while chanting. The number of materials used in worship should be 10. Like 10 Diyas, 10 kinds of flowers, 10 kinds of fruits etc.
