Shri Devchandra Ji Maharaj was the founder of the Nijanand Sampradaya, he had introduced a saintly attitude from his childhood. At the age of 16, he renounced the world and settled in Bhuj in Kutch and later in Jamnagar in search of Brahma-Gyan. Here he explained the Vedas, Vedantic knowledge and Bhagavatam in simple language that was understandable to people irrespective of social class and religious differences. Awakened them to their true selves with the help of divine knowledge called "Tartam". His followers later came to be known as Sundarasath or Pranami.

Consumption of alcohol, non-vegetarian diet, tobacco products etc. are prohibited to the followers of Nijanand sect. Followers recite hymns and verses from his holy book Kuljam Swaroop alias Tartam Sagar, worshiping the holy book as God himself. In the Nijanand temples, which are dedicated to Shri Rajshyamji.
