According to legend, a devotee named Bhadra, son of Meru, performed severe penance to Bhagwan Ram. Pleased with his devotion, Bhagwan Vishnu appeared before him in the form of Vaikuntha Rama, accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana. The hill on which Bhadra performed penance came to be known as Bhadragiri, later called Bhadrachalam.
The sanctum sanctorum of the temple houses a unique four-armed Vaikuntha-style statue of Bhagwan Ram, holding a conch, discus, bow, and arrow. Sita and Lakshmana are seated beside him. This style is considered extremely rare in Rama temples. The beautiful Dravidian-style gopurams and mandapams, the Vaikuntha Dwarams, and the gold-plated flagpoles are major attractions.
The temple became famous in the 17th century due to the devotion of Kancherla Gopanna, also known as Bhadrachala Ramadasu. He was a revenue official under Sultan Abul Hasan Qutb Shah of Golconda. Ramadasu used government funds to renovate and develop the temple, which led to his imprisonment. According to religious traditions, Bhagwan Ram and Lakshmana appeared before the Sultan and paid the amount in gold coins, resulting in the release of Ramadasu.
According to Bhaktibharat, this temple is deeply associated with the Ramayana tradition and is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Telangana.
