Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. It is a major Hindu pilgrimage center dedicated to Devi Bhadrakali, who is also identified as Kannagi of the Tamil epic Silappadikaram. Attukal Bhagavathy Temple History and Architecture
The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple was built by local kings. The Travancore royal family renovated it in the 19th century. There are two idols inside the temple: one adorned with gold ornaments and precious stones and the other placed behind it. The temple has intricate carvings of deities like Mahishasuramardini, Sri Parvati, Lord Shiva and the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The southern gopuram depicts Dakshayaga and the story of Kannaki is told on both sides.
Often referred to as the \"Sabarimala of Women\", the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is known for its architectural excellence that blends the Kerala and Tamil Nadu styles. The intricate carvings depict various deities like Mahishasuramardini and Sri Parvati along with Lord Shiva and also have mythological stories on its walls.
Attukal Bhagavathy Temple Darshan Timings
Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is open throughout the week and the darshan timings are from 5:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The temple remains closed from 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
Major Festivals at Attukal Bhagavathy Temple
Attukal Pongal is the major festival. Held in February or March every year, this 10-day festival culminates on the ninth day with lakhs of women preparing the holy offering called Pongal. It holds the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of women for a religious activity.
Navaratri, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Kuthiyottam and Thalappoli (traditional rituals performed by boys and girls, symbolizing the warriors of the Goddess). Puja Vaayapu (celebrated on Vijayadashami day). Aishwarya Puja: All are conducted on full moon days.
Devotees can participate in various rituals such as Kunjunnu (first rice feeding ceremony for children), Tulabharam (offering based on weight), Vidyarambham (initiation into education) and Archana (chanting of the Goddess' name). The main prasad, muzhukappu (covering the idol with sandalwood paste), is booked till 2025, and the kalabhabhishekam is booked for the next five years.

Men: Dhoti or white pancha; shirts and vests are not allowed.
Women: Saree or traditional dress; draping with dhoti or white pancha is acceptable.
