What is the story behind Panch Kedar? (पंच केदार के पीछे की कहानी?)

What is the story behind Panch Kedar?
The Panch Kedar are five sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva, located in the Garhwal region of the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
Legend of Panch Kedar
The Panch Kedar pilgrimage, centered around five Shiva temples located in the Garhwal Himalayas, has its origins in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Bhagwan Shiva for the sins they committed during the war. Shiva, initially avoiding them, took the form of a bull and hid in the mountains.

Eventually the Pandavas tracked them down, and when Bhima tried to capture the bull, it sank into the ground, and its body parts appeared in five different places. These places became the Panch Kedar temples: Kedarnath (hump), Tungnath (arms), Rudranath (face), Madhyamaheshwar (navel), and Kalpeshwar (hair).

❀ Kedarnath: The hump of the bull appeared here.
❀ Tungnath: The arms appeared at Tungnath.
❀ Rudranatha: The face appeared at Rudranath.
❀ Madhyamaheshwar: The navel and stomach appeared at Madhyamaheshwar.
❀ Kalpeshwar: The hair and head appeared at Kalpeshwar.

Construction of Temples: The Pandavas built temples at all these places to worship Shiva and seek forgiveness from him.

Spiritual significance of Panch Kedar:
❀ The Pandavas built temples at these five places in honour of Shiva. Worshiping at these five places is considered extremely auspicious and spiritually liberating.

❀ Even today, only a few priests (from South India), particularly from the Karnataka region, are allowed to perform rituals in these temples, maintaining an ancient tradition.

❀ Significance: Most prominent of the five Jyotirlingas. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Bhagwan Shiva.

A large number of Kanwariyas come here during Sawan Somvar. Kalpeshwar is the only temple among the Panch Kedars that remains open throughout the year.
