Sukhdev ji is a great sage in Hindu religion. He was the son of sage Vyas and the chief narrator of the Bhagavata Purana. Shukadevji is depicted as a sannyasi who renounced the world in search of salvation and attained salvation.

According to the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Sukhdev ji was born with ascetic power and the Vedas, just like his father.

Regarding the birth of Sukhdev, it is said that he was the unborn son of Maharishi Ved Vyas and he remained in his mother's womb for twelve years. The story goes like this. Bhagwan Shiva was narrating the immortal story to Parvati. When Bhagwan Shiva came to know that Shuka was listening to everything, he ran to kill Shuka. To save his life, Shuka took a subtle form in Vyas ji's ashram and entered his wife's mouth. It is said that they did not come out of the womb for twelve years. When Bhagwan Shri Krishna himself came and assured him that he would not be affected by Maya when he came out, only then he came out of the womb and was called Vyasji's son. Even in the womb, he had proper knowledge of Vedas, Upanishads, Darshan and Puranas etc.

Sukhdev ji had mastery over Bhagwat Purana. All the glories of Bhagwan Shri Krishna have been told by him only. That is why no story exists without the name of Bhagwan Sukhdev. It was narrated for the first time by Bhagwan Shri Sukhdev Ji in Bhagwat Shuktirtha. Presently Shuktirtha is situated in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh.
