What is the meaning of sankalpa?
The general meaning of sankalpa is to make a firm determination to do some work. There is a tradition in Hindu religion that it is very important to take a sankalpa before doing any kind of worship, ritual or auspicious work. Any puja or auspicious work is considered incomplete without sankalpa. According to the Puranas, by worshiping without any sankalpa, Bhagwan Indra gets all the fruits. ● Any kind of puja is never considered complete without taking a sankalpa. Also, one does not get the full results of worship. Taking a sankalpa in puja means completing the puja considering your favorite deity and yourself as a witness.
● A sankalpa is taken in front of Bhagwan Ganesh so that there is no hindrance of any kind in the puja and the puja is completed. While taking a sankalpa, the five elements fire, earth, sky, air and water are considered witnesses by holding water in the hand. Once the sankalpa is taken, it is necessary to perform puja.

How to perform puja after taking sankalpa?
● In any puja, ritual or auspicious work, Lord Ganesha is first seated at the place of worship.
● Worship should always be done facing east. Bhagwan resides in the east direction.
● Keep the puja materials separate before completing the puja. So that there is no unnecessary disruption in the commencement of the puja.
● If for some reason the idol of Bhagwan Ganesh is not available, then in such a situation it should be installed by wrapping Kalava on a betel nut and spreading a red cloth on the post.
