Who started the tradition of Kanwar Yatra? (कांवर यात्रा की परंपरा किसने शुरू की?)

The month of Sawan is very special for Shiva devotees. The fifth month according to the Hindu calendar is Sawan. Kanwar Yatra also starts from this month. For Shiva devotees, Kavad Yatra is no less than a pilgrimage. Every year on Sawan Shivratri, lakhs of Kanwadiyas come on foot from Haridwar carrying water of the holy river Ganga and perform Jalabhishek in the Shivlingas of their area.
It is a difficult journey. There is such a temple established in Uttar Pradesh, where a huge crowd of Kanwariyas gather during Sawan. This temple is believed to be related to Bhagwan Parshuram. So let us know some beliefs related to this temple.

It is believed in religious texts that Bhagwan Parashuram had started the Kanwar Yatra. That is why he is also called the first Kanwariya. During this, Parshuram ji brought holy Ganga water from Garhmukteshwar Dham through Kanwar and consecrated 'Pura Mahadev' located in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. That is why the tradition of doing Kanwar Yatra is going on. Presently Garhmukteshwar is also known as Brajghat. The glory of this temple is so much that every year in Sawan, lakhs of Kanwariyas come to Pura Mahadev temple to perform the anointing of Shivalinga.

Garhmukteshwar Dham, from where Parshuram ji brought Ganga water to Kanwar, a mythological story is also prevalent about this place. According to the story described in Shivpuran, once Maharishi Durvasa was doing penance on Mandarachal mountain.

Then Bhagwan Shiva's group reached there and started mocking Maharishi Durvasa. This made Maharishi angry and he cursed the Ganas to become vampires. Then, by seeing Bhagwan Shiva, the people of Shiva got freedom from the world of vampires. Therefore this temple is known as 'Gadhmukteshwar' i.e. the God who gives salvation to the people.
